Roosevelt Road, or 12th Street, marks the city's northern border, which it shares with the Village of Oak Park. Historically home to many bars and nightspots in the days when neighboring communities prohibited the sale of liquor, Roosevelt Road has since developed into thriving entertainment corridor with a mix of business and residential options. FitzGerald's Nightclub, located on this Berwyn strip, has a reputation throughout Chicagoland as a premier live-music venue. Its annual American Music Festival, held annually over the 4th of July weekend, draws crowds from across the greater metropolitan area and the across the country. Ogden Avenue, on Berwyn's southside, is part of the Historic US Route 66, America's original "Main Street". Recent streetscape improvements incorportate a 1950's automotive theme for the now thriving business highway. Berwyn's stretch of Ogden plays host to the annual Historic Route 66 Car Show, which attracts over 500 classic cars and 10,000 attendees each year. Nestled between these corridors are the Historic Depot District and the Cermak Road District.
The Depot District is a downtown, transit-oriented district with three Metra commuter stations within four blocks of its center. An historic, traditional commercial district, it is home to two of Berwyn's newest commercial & residential mixed-space developments - Century Station Condominiums and a 5-level parking facility. Cermak Road extends across Berwyn's east-west borders of Lombard & Harlem Avenues. Known today as Berwyn's Main Street, the corridor boasts an eclectic mix of historic treasures and modern vitality with its unique collection of goods and services in a charming neighborhood setting. Berwyn is also home to the prestigious MacNeal Hospital, two thriving park districts, a municipal recreation department, a YMCA, the 16th Street Theater, diverse food and beverage establishments and nightliife options, and plenty of family-friendly events and programming. Take some time to browse this site and explore the many reasons Berwyn is the perfect spot to live or visit. But don't wait - Berwyn won't be Chicago's best-kept secret for long! |
