Lavergne’s Tavern Provides Hometown Spot in the Former Garv’s Inn Location
Lavergne’s Tavern, located at 6546 W Windsor Ave, celebrated a ribbon cutting in conjunction with the City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) on June 29. Lavergne’s opened at the corner of Windsor and East Avenues in the former Garv’s Inn location, a staple in Berwyn since the 1960s. The tavern will feature a seasonal selection of craft beer, housemade cocktails and a creative dining menu.
Berwyn natives and brothers, Jerry and Jorge Hernandez have partnered on Lavergne’s Tavern. They have been in the restaurant business for 15 years, also operating Warren’s Ale House in Wheaton and Ellyn’s Tap in Glen Ellyn. Jerry, who attended Berwyn’s Hiawatha Elementary and Morton West High School, says his top goal is for Berwyn residents to feel like Lavergne’s is their hometown spot. The name “Lavergne’s” is a nod to the days when the south end of Berwyn was originally made up of three communities including LaVergne, Upsala or “Swedetown” and Berwyn.
“It’s wonderful to have a vacant building to now be filled with energy, activity, great food and an opportunity to have yet another great venue in the Depot District. Welcome to the community,” remarked BDC Board President Jousef Mondragon.
Mayor Robert J. Lovero commented, “It’s a great building that you’ve made even better and provides a unique addition to this corner. Welcome to Berwyn and hats off to the Berwyn Development Corporation for continuing to bring these types of businesses to our community.” 2nd Ward Alderman Jeff Boyajian continued, “I want to welcome you to the City of Berwyn and to the 2nd Ward. I’m always available and willing to help when I can.”
The tavern’s interior was designed by Chicago’s award-winning architecture firm, Bauer Latoza Studio. The tin ceiling and hardwood floors were restored, and the storied Garv’s Inn bar was rebuilt from scratch using reclaimed black walnut, giving the space its distinctive, old tavern charm. A combination of high-top bar seating and lower tables help keep the atmosphere friendly to both families and those looking to enjoy a date night or a night out with friends.
“We have a great team with us and couldn’t be happier to be a part of this community,” remarked Owner Jerry Hernandez.
Led by Executive Chef Mark Downing, the tavern’s kitchen has created a menu that is accessible but elevated. Items are priced from $6-$9 for shareable appetizers to entrees at around $14-$16. Eclectic menu items include an Italian Beef Egg Roll, Cajun Scallops and Ramen.
Lavergne’s offers 20 local and craft beers on tap, six to eight carefully selected wines and a curated and fresh ingredient rooted cocktail list. Their beer menu is updated regularly and they are committed to serving great beer that compliments their food. Owner Jorge Hernandez commented, “The quality of the beer and the food are very important to us. We’re beer people.”
Lavergne’s Tavern is open Sunday through Thursday 11 AM to 1 AM and Friday and Saturday 11 AM to 3 AM.
