Meet Marlene Comella, blooming beautiful bouquets and more at Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop (6704 W 16th St, Berwyn), est Mar 1978
Hometown: Berwyn, IL
Current Residence: Berwyn, IL
About Marlene: I have spent my entire life living in Berwyn – 66 years! My husband and business partner, Alan, and I grew up as neighbors on 21st and Wesley. I went to St. Mary of Celle & Immaculate Heart of Mary High School and am a graduate of DePaul University. Alan and I have 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren. Family is a very important part of our lives.
The Business Side: Violet Flower Shop was a part of the Berwyn community for many years. We are the fourth owners and purchased the shop in March of 1978. Alan had a background in the floral industry. I, however, returned to design school. Because we had the greenhouse, shop, attached apartment and yard, we were able to work and have our children with us. It really was a family business, as my mom, dad and family pitched in whenever needed. As the business grew more, employees were added – and they too became a part of our work family. We are able to use the business as a means of giving back to the community!
Describe yourself using 3 words.
If I had to describe myself in three words, it would be caring, loyal, and creative. I have a great love of family and friends. Loyalty compliments that adjective as well. I would do anything to support those that I love. I enjoy being creative part of my job is to help people express themselves with flowers. This is something I truly enjoy doing.
What inspires you?
Nature inspires me. There is so much beauty around us, I never get tired of choosing beautiful flowers to design with.
Tell us something that people might not know about you.
Something you may not know about me is that I love to cook. I teach children to eat healthy by preparing dishes using foods they have grown through volunteering at the North Berwyn Park District.
What gets you through a rough day?
What gets me through a rough day, other than a glass of good red wine, is my grandchildren. They make me laugh, they are generous with their hugs & kisses, and they all make me so very proud.
What is your fondest memory?
I have so many fond memories. Among them are the holidays and the every-days when my Mom & Dad were alive. I grew up knowing I was always loved and supported by the two greatest people. You just always believe that those you love will always be with you. They set a high bar for us to follow as spouses, parents, and grandparents.
