Meet Berwyn’s Entrepreneurs: Dr. Berenice Lopez of Smile Fixation
Name: Dr. Berenice Lopez
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Current Residence: Chicago, IL
All About Berenice: For most people, dentistry doesn’t sound very interesting. For me, dentistry is a childhood dream I have been chasing for years. I have been a lifelong resident of Chicago. After earning my Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Illinois in Chicago, I entered the dental world to explore my passion for promoting oral health in under-served communities. For over 15 years I fulfilled my mission in promoting the benefits of oral health in a community health center in Pilsen. I also enjoy educating young children on benefits of oral health by volunteering my spare time at daycare centers and elementary schools. I guess you could say I’m living the dream. I’m an active member of the American Dental Association, the Chicago Dental Society and the Illinois State Dental. I currently live in Chicago with my incredibly loving husband, two beautiful children and a pet Yorkie. I gravitate to hobbies that require working with my hands. When not practicing dentistry you’ll find me engrossed in creating and designing paper crafts for birthday parties. I am particularly enamored with the therapeutic benefits of gardening in the summers and crocheting in the winters. I also enjoy the wellness benefits of practicing yoga, jogging and reading.
The Business Side: A self-described dental guru, I am a general dentist who is committed to the well being and oral health of my patients. I believe that a healthy smile is the connection to general good health. I am conscientious in my quest to stay abreast of new dental research and procedures geared towards helping my patients achieve a healthy smile. Most recently, I opened the doors to my state-of-the-art general dentistry practice Smile Fixation in Berwyn, IL, where I’m focused on providing the most advanced quality dental care in a cozy and pleasant space.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Meticulous: From an early age, I demonstrated a keen attention to detail. I was the child who kept a tidy desk at school and organized drawers at home. It was definitely an annoyance to my siblings. As a dentist, being meticulous is certainly a positive attribute to have. My pristine dental office shows this attribute.
Innovative: In dentistry, I’m constantly looking for improved systems to run my business smoothly. I’m open to change and easily adapt if the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. The innovative wheels are constantly turning. At home, I love seeking ideas on Pinterest and ideas that quickly spiral into even bigger and better ideas. I love creating crafts for family events and I’m usually the go-to person when it comes to designing and creating an eye-catching centerpiece or birthday banner.
Reliable: I learned to be reliable at an early age. As the second eldest child my parents trusted me to help care for my younger siblings when necessary. You can say a was responsible babysitter. In my career this is also an awesome attribute to have. Can you imagine if your dentist was not reliable?
What inspires you?
My loving and incredibly sweet husband of 17 years and my two beautiful children are a true inspiration in my life. They keep me grounded and remind me everyday that humans are not perfect. They inspire me to be forgiving, caring and understanding. They are a blessing.
Tell us something that people might not know about you.
Something people might not know about me is that I joined an adult gymnastics class a few months ago. I never learned to do a noteworthy cartwheel as a child. I was inspired by my 7 year old daughter to join the adult gymnastics class. She said, “Mommy don’t be afraid to do gymnastics; it’s fun!” She was right. It truly is fun and liberating.
As a general dentist, I wanted to establish my roots in a friendly and diverse community. It is not hard to see all the wonderful things Berwyn is doing to make this a desirable neighborhood. Everybody has been nothing but friendly and helpful in my transition from Chicago to Berwyn.
What makes you laugh?
Many things make me laugh. My husband and kids are natural born comedians. My kids have a talent for memorizing riddles that they’ll ask during meals. A good clean joke is always welcomed. The silliest of dental memes will make me chuckle for days. I have a good sense of humor.
What is one question you get asked repeatedly about your profession?
I always get asked if I stare at teeth. Absolutely! It is my job to do so. I do like to look at teeth. It’s amazing how teeth come in all shapes and sizes. I’m very discreet when looking at teeth, though.
What song do you have completely memorized?
I have one song completely memorized, “Imagine” by John Lennon. It was the song I had to memorize for my eighth grade graduation ceremony. The message of the song is one that has resonated with me for many years. I do “imagine all the people living life in peace.”
What’s the worst hairstyle you’ve ever had?
The worst hairstyle I had was in 8th grade. It was the Aquanet teased-up-front part of the hair with a body wave perm on the back part. I recently watched Despicable Me 3 with my kids. The villain in the movie, Evil Bratt, reminded me of that hideous hairstyle. A few years ago, I celebrated my birthday with an 80’s theme. I attempted to replicate that hairstyle but it was hard to do.
If you had intro music, what song would it be and why?
My intro song would be “Eye of the Tiger,” by Survivor. I’m not sure why but the music is motivational and it sort of gets your heart racing. I love motivating people to excel and show their talents. At times, I imagine myself traveling around the world as a motivational speaker and upon my emergence unto the the podium or stage, this would be my intro song.
